YSI Calibration Solutions and Buffers Expiration Times

Posted by YSI, a Xylem brand on Jul 18, 2014 12:12:30 PM

We provide buffers and calibration solutions for our water quality meters that have shelf lives or expiration times that should be adhered to.  Since your data is only as good as your calibration, we recommend understanding the expiration dates of the solutions you use.

The Ultimate pH Primer - Are you Familiar with Hydrogen?

Posted by Patrick Higgins on Apr 8, 2014 3:18:00 PM

So, we've all heard of pH but how many of you know what pH stands for?  Go ahead, take a guess before reading on.  The term pH is derived from a combination of 'p' for the word power and 'H' representing the element of Hydrogen.  Together, pH means 'the power of hydrogen'.  The measurement of pH is a convenient way for us to compare the relative acidity (acidic) or alkalinity (basic) nature of a solution at any given temperature.  A pH of 7 describes a neutral solution because the activities of hydrogen and hydroxide ions are equal. When the pH is below 7, the solution becomes more acidic because the activity of hydrogen ions is greater than that of hydroxide ions.  When the pH is above 7, the solution is more basic (or alkaline) because the activity of hydroxide ion is greater than that of hydrogen ions.

Extend the Life of Your pH Electrode in 3 Practical Steps

Posted by Lyndsey McDermand on Oct 24, 2013 3:28:00 PM

Earlier this week, we shared with you the proper way to maintain and care for your instrument when storing it for the season.  We thought we would go a step further and build on that topic, by narrowing it down a bit, and providing answers to the questions we get from our beloved customers and that you very well may have at the moment.  How do pH electrodes have to be maintained, cared for, and stored?

You want good pH data.  Who doesn’t?  You deserve good data, but for good pH data you need to calibrate.  You need to calibrate well and calibrate often.  For more precise pH measurement, you should calibrate before each measurement, but a good rule of thumb to follow is to calibrate your pH meter at the beginning of each day.
